No Passing Through Horse Parade Blocks State Street Traffic

A wooden horse with a No Passing Through placard sparked a lengthy traffic jam on Devonshire and State streets near Adams square. Express wagons, drays, and horse cars clogged the thoroughfare, while a railroad squad sergeant orchestrated the maneuver to create an opening for vehicles to escape. The scene repeated later, becoming a daily pantomime for onlookers.

Death of Alderman Edward F. Leighton Mourned in Boston

Mourners filled 44 Pinckney street as prayers were offered for Edward F. Leighton of the board of aldermen. Services followed at Bulfinch place chapel with Rev. Samuel H. Winkley. Pallbearers included ex-Aldermen Wooley Kendricken McDonald Hersey and others. City officials led by Mayor O Brien attended. The funeral at Mt Hope cemetery concluded a day of prominent tributes from the civic and business community.

Metropolitan Railroad Starts Laying New Tracks

The Metropolitan railroad company has begun laying new tracks from Adams square through Devonshire State and Congress streets to Postoffice square. The rails follow President C A Richards pattern with a slight inner flange. The system aims to prevent wheels from catching in joints and to keep rails secure. In about two weeks service will begin relieving Washington street blockades as part of aldermanic railroad plans. The Highland South Boston and Middlesex horse railway companies will start laying new track in a few days.
