Boston honored the world champion Braves last night with a ceremony led by Mayor Curley and the City Council at Copley Plaza. The grill room was decorated for the occasion as baseball guests and other attendees were feasted and entertained to mark the champions’ prestige.
Mayor Curley chaired a city hall banquet with Manager Stallings and City Council members nearby. The Boston team, led by President Gaffney, received tributes during a seven to nine pm evening of speeches, capped by Lieutenant-Governor Edward P. Barry mentioning his gubernatorial ambitions.
Eight horses perished in a seven thousand dollar stable fire in Hingham last night. The blaze started in a rear shed of Humphrey Brothers and quickly consumed the structure, though a horse, 15 harness sets, and nearly a dozen wagons were saved. Fire Chief George Cushing and police will investigate the cause. The stable, connected to a grocery store and a residence, was locked at 7 30 with flames seen at 8 15.
In Worcester on October 14 Thomas Raymond aged 2 filed for divorce in Superior Court claiming his wife treated the marriage as a joke from the start. He testified she constantly smiled and laughed at the ceremony and even laughed when her mother and later his mother tried to intercede. Judge Sanderson took the case under advisement.
Two Boston terriers barked loudly in the Hughes residence on Cabot Street Newtonville late last night waking Mrs Stephen P Hughes and enabling her to awaken and evacuate her family as a fire gutted one side of the house.
Mrs Slughes, alarmed by smoke, guided by her husband, escorted daughters Loretta and Rose and sons Joseph and Leo and the maid from a smoke filled house. Mr Hughes phoned the fire brigade as flames caused 31500 in damage, believed due to a defective flue.
Max Klayman a 31 year old Russian immigrant living at 1388 Brighton Street leaped from a rear fire escape, after a prior failed attempt the day before. Injured in an elevator accident weeks earlier, he had been despondent and unable to secure work for his planned marriage to an 18 year old Russian girl. He died at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Rome reports the Osservatore Romano prints the official appointment of Cardinal Merry del Val as secretary of the congregation of the Holy Office after formerly serving as papal secretary of state. The notice is dated in Rome via Paris on October 15 at 1:02 AM.
Worcester, Oct. 14 Thomas H Tombard, convicted of second degree murder in the death of Erhard Reithel, a Pondville Woolen Mills foreman, has decided not to appeal and faces life imprisonment at Monday’s sentencing.
