As violence peaks in Manchuria, Kuropatkin's forces retreat south toward Mukden after Liaoyang fighting. News estimates total casualties near 70 000 with two thirds on the Russian side. Wounded crowd roads, cripples seek hospital shelter while Japanese report steady advances and the capture of over 60 guns.
The speech at Cooper Union by Hon. Richard Olney of Massachusetts urges two Republican tools against trusts. He proposes preventing railroad favoritism and equalizing service and charges, and suggests tariff reforms to broaden competition and reduce extortion by monopolies and allied producers and carriers.
Washington reports that a pouch with mail for the U S cruiser Cincinnati, aboard the Calchas, was opened by Russian officials, resealed, and sent on. The State Department will handle action, with a likely protest to Russia.
London reports from the Standard’s correspondent at Yental that dated October 10 the entire Russian line has been driven back about 20 miles with 70 guns captured. Pursuit continues on both flanks as Oyama attempts to envelop the enemy. The defeat is attributed to a Japanese wedge into the Russian center.

Chatham, Oct 14. Life saving crews searched the sands for the 12 aboard the Windsor Nova Scotia schooner Wentworth off Pollock Rip. Only two bodies recovered the woman with seaweed in her hair and a man presumed her husband. Wreckage lay along the beach as high seas hampered rescue efforts.

A Tokio despatch to the Standard says the Japanese right army isolated three to four Russian divisions in the Bensihu Kiaotau district. It claims KuropatkIn is with the force which appears doomed. The central army took 11 guns and the left 2, with the right’s spoils expected to be greater.
