An official dispatch from Manchurian front headquarters reports Japanese forces achieving decisive advantages in yesterday’s fighting. The left Oku army captured 25 guns, the central army 16, as operations to surround Russians at Bentsihu proceed. Numbers engaged exceed those at Liaoyang, with the bombardment of PT Arthur and heavy actions continuing.
Partly cloudy today in Boston and vicinity. Saturday will be warmer with light northwest winds shifting to variable. Forecast covers the metro area with mild conditions and light breeze through the weekend.
Three young children aged 5, 3, and 2 were rescued from a blazing attic at 21 Concord Street Charlestown last night after a candle sparked a fire. Neighbors Edward O'Sullivan, Charles J. Smith, Arthur P. Russell and T. J. Tibbetts rushed inside, with Nat Bowering sounding the alarm. Firefighters contained the fire to the attic and damage was estimated at $20.
At a Faneuil Hall meeting, Bishop Brent of the Philippines and Rev. Dr. J. P. Peters defend the closed shop as a public health necessity. They argue churches should recognize trade unions' good and note ministers rely on employers for funds. Unions have largely established the closed shop, reducing sweatshop conditions.
Miss Lillian Warren a 40 year old seamstress was found murdered on FPownal street Charlottetown P E I with two fatal wounds to head and neck near the City Hospital. A blood stained axe lay nearby and Michael Power of Charlestown Massachusetts has been arrested amid reports of insanity. Police seek a second man in the alleged murder with no motive given and the victim was last seen alive about 7 PM while returning from work.
A Charlestown State prison release bulletin states Michael Power, possibly the Charlottetown inmate, was discharged February 10, 1902. He finished a six to ten year Boston robbery sentence and received months off for good behavior, later seen in Boston before likely traveling to Charlottetown last week.
