London reports continued Italian gains south of Gorizia with additional positions captured and 1771 prisoners. Since Aug 6, Italians claim 30 881 Austrian losses in the Julian Alps region northwest of Trieste. Austrian attacks on the Carso plateau were repulsed.
The Red Sox defeated the Robins 4 to 1 in Brooklyn, finishing with three hits allowed and a dominant pitching display. Lewis starred at bat while Gardner anchored the defense as the crowd of 42,620 set attendance records.
The eastern Transylvanian front shows Rumanians in retreat while Teutonic allies push from the north. Bucharest claims counterattacks on northern and northwestern fronts were repelled.
Leo C. Graham a private in the Thirty first Michigan Infantry was fatally wounded in the guard tent by Alvin Satter a guard of the same regiment in El Paso Texas. Officers call it an accidental wound while surgeons say the death may result from a card game incident.
Graham and Sauer were confined to a guard tent for a minor offense when a rifle report rang out. Graham staggered from the tent with holes in his back and chest and died about thirty minutes later after medical aid from Lieutenant Joseph O Connor and division doctors.
Deloide Proulx and Ernest Paquin, both of Manchester, were killed when their automobile skidded on a sandy Hooksett road and overturned onto rocks. Antonio Provent of Nashua, the driver, suffered a fractured skull.

Porter H. Adams of Brookline arrived at the Copley Plaza with a young woman identified as Miss Irene MecGuill Gourlay from Toronto. After they registered as Mr. and Mrs Adams, another car pulled up and Mrs. Charles A. Adams, the groom’s mother, stepped out.
Adams and Miss Gourlay sped from Thetford Vermont with Adams’ mother and a chauffeur. They married in Springfield Vermont after an impromptu stop at a Congregational church. The pair then returned to Boston amid congratulations from Mrs Adams.
George R. Sparrell a Marblehead shoe maker and Dedham resident vanished for 36 hours after sending letters to his wife and brother in law claiming he would die by his own hand. Police and fire crews dragged Motley’s Pond but he returned home in the late afternoon declining to comment on the notes or his whereabouts.

Bill Carrigan the two time world champion manager for Boston baseball may retire to run for mayor of Lewiston Maine. He emphasized retirement after a final appearance in professional baseball and hinted the campaign would be handled by himself as a Democratic standard bearer. The Lewiston race is viewed as a potential upset for Carrigan and his supporters.
The British steamship City of Madras was halted off Ambrose Channel lightship by the U S torpedo boat destroyer Sterrett after ignoring signals to stop while leaving quarantine. It was brought to Clifton, Staten Island for inspection and explanation.

Edward Powers, 35, of Winsor Street Cambridge, was killed last night in Weymouth by a car driven by Harrison Loring Wart, a Technology student from Brookline. Wart, a nephew of Atherton Loring, rode with two brothers and two women in the vehicle. The women named Martha Beren and Alica Tengen, both of 1053 Beacon Street.
Powers a former Boston fire department driver led two horses from a Weymouth auction to Hingham when Wirt, traveling about 30 miles per hour, struck him head on. Wirt said he failed to see the man in the road and was arrested for manslaughter, released on $1000 bond posted by his uncle Atherton Loring.

Justan Johnson aged 32 of 27 Washington Street Cambridge fell from a skiff near Harvard Bridge on the Cambridge side of the Charles River Basin about 6 o clock last night and drowned. The body was recovered.
