Savant Charles Richardson buried at Dartmouth College

Record Balloon Race At Paris Winds Shift Across Mediterranean

Maurice Bienaime led the French entrants in Picardie as the 1812 winner swung off in a light breeze at four o clock while a crowd packed Tuilleries Gardens. Swiss pilot Palmarin did not start, and Rene Rumpel Mayer followed in the early ascent. Most crews prepared with canvas anchors and lifebelts as the Mediterranean crossing was contemplated if needed. Captain Honeywell’s heavy balloon risked the Louvre roof before ballast saved the craft as the race drifted southwest over the city.
