Tolman jailed for usury in New York loan offices

David R. Tolman known as a loan shark was found guilty of usury under state law. He received a six month penitentiary sentence after a clerk testified he paid 20 percent annual interest for $10 for three months. Tolman said he ran between 4 and 50 loan offices nationwide.

Man Kills Stepfather After Choking Wife in Des Moines

William D. Straight, 27, shot and killed his stepfather Clarence Grimm, 38, in Des Moines after Grimm allegedly choked Straight’s wife. Straight told police he found Grimm choking his wife, retrieved a shotgun, and fired.

Arrest Made Over Forged Check in South Boston

Fred V. McVickey of 15 Boston Place South Boston was arrested by Special Officer Carey at City Hall avenue station for uttering a forged check dated September 2 at the John F. McCary saloon 3861 Atlantic avenue.

Copper Roof Theft At New Building Sparks Arrests

John F Smith of Roxbury and Octavio De Silva of Somerville were charged with larceny of 500 pounds copper and 75 pounds lead from the roof at 125 Milk Street for New England Telephone. Copper traced to Harry Miller's 80 Central Wharf junk shop where 100 pounds were recovered. Miller charged with receiving stolen goods. Police say the pair climbed the roof nightly since August 20 until captured yesterday.

Calumet Michigan October 9 The extended injunction by the State Supreme Court against copper mine strikers curb ed protest with no disorder and no picketing observed in the district.
