Herbert J. Henson and Charles W. Pilger fled Deer Island prison on a raft into Shirley Gut late Saturday night. They battled huge waves and were rescued near dawn Sunday by Captain Dolliver aboard the pilot boat Louise. They credit a red bandanna handkerchief with keeping them afloat.
Land U S troops in Cuba recounts a dramatic rescue and escape on Deer Island with convicts Henson and Pilger, their perilous trek to a vegetable shed and a life raft, and their recovery after hours of struggle. It then moves to Havana reporting the first landing of American soldiers, camp setup at Camp Columbia, and disarmament progress under General Funston with Taft and Bacon optimistic about a quick home return.
In a jealous rage Harry J. Slocomb shot Deborah Hill in their Castle Square Hotel room and killed himself. Both were found by hotel staff with a revolver and morphine boxes nearby. Hill, wounded, was taken to City Hospital as her daughter Christine Hill visited later.
Chauncey Brooks McCormick of Chicago Yale senior was gored by a buck elk in Marvel Wood Park near Yale field. Accompanied by two classmates they entered Percy Griest’s private game preserve. McCormick was attacked three times, knocked into a tree branch, bruised and bleeding, no bones broken. a surgeon treated him at the priest home and he may stay in his room a week.
Heavy seas and winds over 30 miles per hour battered the harbor. Seven yachts with 41 people aboard were disabled in Boston Harbor and rescued from dangerous positions. Many others were torn from moorings while police boats and life savers worked all day to assist.
The gasoline launch Andrux owned by William F. Gadsby of Roxbury ran aground on rocks off Rainsford Island during a voyage with three men and four women. Heavy seas disabled the propeller, the craft drifted ashore, and the party was later landed at City Point. The tender narrowly capsized while delivering the women ashore.
The Naussett a yacht owned by Harold Page Boston jeweller was towed into Portsmouth New Hampshire in poor condition. Crew Harold Page Lawrence Beebe of Melrose and Captain Frank Paterson of Gloucester suffered after their perilous voyage from Boston to Saco Maine. A northeast gale off Isles of Shoals drove them to abandon to breakwater but anchors failed.

A Boston Theatre audience including Mayor Fitzgerald raised $10,550 for the Irish Parliamentary party. Hon. T. P. O'Connor outlined Ireland's progress toward self government as contributors from the crowd pledged from $1 to $500.
About 200 men closely tied to Irish affairs were present on the platform including Henry Lloyd Garrison Congressman John A Kelcher and Mayor Fitzgerald. The scene included Dr J Timmins James Vahey T B Fitzpatrick and many others with Mrs T P O Connor in attendance. Edward Blake M P unable to attend due to bronchitis and Daniel Ryan of Philadelphia sent regrets from Toronto.
Chicago Americans closed their championship season with a defeat to Detroit. Boston fans favor the Americans in the upcoming world championship series. Women’s national golf tournament opens at Brae Burn links, Weat Newton, at 10 am. Hugh MacLean wins another bicycle race in Pertias. Saturday football verdict more favorable to the new rules.
In Salem on October 7 John W. Cody aged 13 was electrocuted after grabbing a live electric light wire dangling from a broken pole near his home. He collapsed instantly, was taken indoors, and died despite a physician’s efforts.
The forecast calls for Monday fair with Tuesday partly cloudy and warmer in Boston and vicinity. In New England and Eastern New York expect fair conditions Monday and Tuesday with fresh west winds. Steamers leaving Monday for European ports will enjoy fresh west winds and fair weather toward the Grand Banks.
