Rare Mosaic divorce ceremony held in Louisville synagogue
Mrs. J. Levin received a divorce from her dead husband’s name according to Mosaic law in Nai Jakob Synagogue Louisville last Sunday. The late husband, a pedler, was killed June 27 by two tramps. Orthodox law would have required the dead man’s eldest brother to marry, but Mrs. Levin refused to marry Israel Moses Levin. Two Chicago rabbis officiated due to Louisville’s lack of local Orthodoxy, and a thrifty 25 cent per head fee was charged with a small congregation present.
