A Nassau dispatch reports the steamer Earnmoor foundered Sept. 5 in a hurricane while bound from Baltimore for Rio Janeiro. Seven of twenty eight crew survived, landed at Nassau in a dying condition. The Barnmoor crew list includes Captain Grey and twenty three firemen and seamen, with several named officers and ratings. The cargo was 86,000 bushels of wheat and merchandise valued at 70,700, insured, vessel built 1887, 2010 tons.
New Orleans dispatch details the Corona of Ouachita Line exploding at False River opposite Port Hudson causing the loss of the steamer with about forty deaths. The City of St Louis rescued many survivors. list includes captains clerks and passengers with several saved by Captain James O Neil.
A Virginia anti Mahone conference declares Mahone blocked Norfolk ticket by deceit and tyrannical planning. A construction train on the Mackey railroad left the track near Reprorp Indiana. Nineteen of twenty eight men aboard were seriously hurt with six dangerously injured and two expected to die. Local physicians attended to the wounded.
A Lowell meeting drew local and out of town capitalists to plan a 25 000 spindle cotton mill in Denison Texas. Delegates included Colonel M. Hi French W M Mick F Foster and J M Kilgore. Denison Cotton Manufacturing Company would start with 600 000 capital stock and 5000 shares. Operatives would be drawn from the white native population.
In San Francisco Judge Sawyer decides the Handy & Co case against Barton Atkins US marshal Alaska. The ruling holds that orders from Alaskan authorities on seized vessels and their prizes apply in all American waters. The decision covers ships San Diego San Jose and Eilen and other cases where prize crews fled to Puget Sound or port.
At Oni1caco October 8, the coroner held an inquest into the Chicago Rock Island Pacific wreck near South Englewood. Jurors found engineer Seth Twombly and fireman LaCloche responsible for Michael OConor's death and they were jailed without bonds set at 150000 each.

A large peat fire near Geneva destroys about 5500 acres of land and 6000 tons of hay valued at 100000 and 30000 respectively. The blaze is beneath the surface, hindering firefighting efforts. Nearby incidents include a fatal barn fire in Lewiston and house fire in Fitz William with notable losses.
