Collision Near Vineyard Sound In Fog Damages Schooner

The schooner Ira D. Sturgis captained by Kerrigan from St John to New York with lumber was struck six miles west of Vineyard Sound Lightship by steamer H M Whitney in fog. Sturgis sustained heavy damage and was towed to Vineyard Haven, then to New Bedford for repairs. Whitney proceeded to Boston.

Lime Schooner Richard Hill Sinks After Collision

In heavy fog off Sands Point the City of Brockton struck the lime laden schooner Richard Hill bound for New York. The crew were rescued. Captain Ellis was saved after being swept overboard. The schooner later sank with no insurance on her 149 ton, 1861 Delaware build, valued at 90000.
