Three colored men tied to Jamaica Plain burglary and assault

A Cambridge man William V. Broughton was robbed near Cottage Farm station by three colored men. One suspect, John Smith alias Sterling, was captured after a long chase, with watch and jewelry found on him. Police link Smith to the Abbott residence break at 7 Custer street and seek the two other suspects.

Mrs Hoyt Dies after Childbirth in New York Home

Actress Caroline Miskel Hoyt wife of Charles H. Hoyt died at 2 o clock in her New York residence soon after delivering a daughter. The infant survived only hours. Obstetric specialists Dr. Robert Watts and Dr. E. H. Grandin attended. The Hoyts mourn a double loss, as two years earlier they lost a young daughter.

Hunters Fire Upon Electric Car Near Beulah

An open car of the Fall River and New Bedford railway was shot at near Beulah four miles from Fall River just before 4 PM. Passengers including Thomas E. Crowther and Charles F. Chadwick were struck by bird shot. Crowther was hit on the nose, Chadwick’s hat was struck, and Joseph Walker was wounded in the cheek and neck. George Taylor and George Brown were arrested as suspects. the third shooter is unnamed.

Actress Caroline Seales Hoyt Dies After Stage Career

Mrs. Caroline Seales Hoyt died at 25 East Thirtieth Street with her husband, mother, and sister present. Born September 15, 1873 in Covington Kentucky, she first appeared with Robert Mantell and later at Daly's Theatre. She married Hoyt on March 4 1894 and retired, then returned last year in her husband’s play. Burial planned for Tuesday in Charlestown New Hampshire.

Foreman Drinks Carbolic Acid in Accident at Wharf

A Metropolitan Coal Company foreman on Congress Street died after drinking carbolic acid by mistake. Emergency physicians failed to save him. The incident followed a wharf scene where Cyrus Sencabaugh allegedly brought a basket with a carbolic acid bottle. Reardon, a married man with children, drank half a pint.

In Memory of Ellis Services Held for Charles H Ellis

In New York on October 2 services were held at Washington Avenue Baptist Church in memory of Charles H Ellis of the cruiser Brooklyn who died at Reise Captains Philip Cook and Sigs attended and the address was given to Lieutenant-Governor Woodruff.

At his home on 2012 Seneca street Lazar Meyer celebrated his 60th birthday with his three daughters and four sons. He received gifts including a gold watch and chain and an umbrella. Guests included Miss J Wilson Miss M Berliner Messrs L Berliner D Grandberg and M Berkowitz.

Democratic platform outlined for Worcester convention

The Democratic State Platform declares opposition to trusts and Alger, calls for bimetallism with equal dollar value for all, supports industrial schools, local self government, and state regulation of utilities. It endorses municipal ownership of electric and gas, opposes railway consolidation, and supports aid for soldiers and sailors. The Worcester gathering will nominate state officers and present the platform, noting George Fred Williams is not a candidate unless compelled.

West India cyclone lashes Savannah coast with high tides

Savannah reports an eighteen hour hurricane from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with winds 60 to 70 mph. Severe flooding along Georgia and South Carolina sea islands submerges lowlands, devastates rice crops, and damages ships, wharves, and rail lines. News from Tybee and distant islands is scarce as telegraph lines fail.
