Noted actor Francis S. Chanfrau died in Jersey City on Thursday October 2 after a paralytic illness. Born February 22 1824 in New York he carved a long stage career including The Forrest Dramatic and Kit or the Arkansas Traveller. Raymond winter excursions to California bid fair to succeed

The Raymond Whitcomb plans for two winter outings to California show strong demand. One group departs Boston November 6 and the other January 8, spending two months at Hotel del Monte Monterey and other Pacific resorts. A Niagara Falls excursion is planned for next Tuesday with a special Pullman train and three days at the International hotel, as membership fills quickly. Grain fraud scheme tied to Stratford dealer in Ontario

Stratford, Ont. October 2. A two year scheme to defraud customs by grain smuggling with untruthful invoices has been uncovered. Walter Marshall, once a local miller now operating in the United States with Michigan headquarters, allegedly shipped large grain consignments to local buyers while his son cleared shipments and certified false invoices. The plan invoiced 400 bushels of wheat while loading 500, gaining by 100 bushels and evading duties. Marshall is under bonds and the case has been sent to Ottawa.

Inauguration opens Vermont Gov Pingree term with oath

Gov. Pingree was inaugurated in Montpelier with Judge T. P. Redfield administering the oath. He delivered his message as a 15 gun salute rang from the state arsenal. The session’s first bill would place appointive rather than elected posts on a broad slate and grant brigadier general rank. Lieut. Gov. Ormsbee assumed the senate presidency and a special committee was named to probe postmaster election integrity.

Railway war ends in arbitration deal and pool rates

New York reporters say Commissioner Fink announced the railway war is terminated by General Manager Sargent of the Grand Trunk line. Arbitration will settle disputed questions. 60 day withdrawal is waived and Jan 8 percentages apply to dead and livestock. Pool rates of 25 cents on dead freight and proportional livestock charges go into effect tomorrow. Telegraph from Chicago confirms freight rates restored to 21 cents and all east bound freights billed at pool rates today by all roads.

Harbor Line Sought on Merrimac River by Haverhill

The city of Haverhill asked harbor and land commissioners to establish a harbor line on the Merrimac river. At the state board of education meeting the secretary was authorized to promote the Massachusetts educational system exhibit at the New Orleans exposition within available means. Dr. Miner noted visitors at normal schools receive a synopsis of instruction on the physiological effects of alcohol.
