John A. Snow, a long time forger with fifteen years in crime, recently finished a second state prison term and now stands charged with forging the name of Charles W. Sawyer. If convicted this time, he faces twenty five years under the habitual criminal act. He was released last July fourth and promptly resumed illegal activity, attempting to cash a forged Sawyer check at Bunker Hill National Bank and later contacting Isaiah P. Lewis in South Boston to buy furniture and present a $22 check.

Ishpeming dispatch reports Abraham Thompson rescued alive from the Norrie mine after thirty hours trapped by a rock and ore collapse. He is uninjured but frightened and unaware of the fate of ten missing miners, whom rescuers fear are dead in adjoining rooms as a rock face remains unstable and perilous for the crew. The missing include Frank and Samuel Dausham, John Johnson, Simon Vedein, John Bloomquist, Herman Erickson, Jacob Sundquist, Matt Mather, John Hermanson, and Michael Downs.

The Great Barrington fair ended a successful run with crowd estimates around 30,000. E A Neidert, a fancy bicyclist, fell and broke his arm this afternoon. Chepita, J J Webster of Pittsfield, won the 2 25 class in three straight heats. Cornwall, S W Smith of Lee, won the 2 24 class in three straight heats. Doyle of Adams won the 100 yard dash in 10 seconds. Two people were injured slightly in a team jam.
Taunton closes its fair today after a 11 000 attendance. The 2 27 race winner was E R Wilson's bay gelding Frank Wilkes with best time 2 254. The 2 34 class winner was W H Paine's bay gelding James A Garfield with time 2 29y. The free for all went to Stones Hy Wilkes in 2 21.
Martin H. Higgins of L. B. Higgins dry goods firm was found dead in his City Hotel room in Taunton on Sept 30. He died of heart disease, having been dead about twenty hours. A native of Newfane Vermont, he had conducted business in Taunton since 1865.
In Williamstown on September 30 the annual sophomore versus freshman game ended after two innings with the sophomores leading 4 to 0. The match will be replayed tomorrow.
The steamer Providence of the Fall River line is libelled for 50000 by Benjamin A. Van Brunt and others owners of the schooner Benjamin A. Van Brunt and the Staples Coal Co. The collision occurred Sept 7 in Fall River harbor, sinking the schooner with its coal freight. Libel claims the steamer was moving at high speed in fog when the impact happened.
Officers of Division 1 arrested Henry Nason, 28, of Portland Maine, for breaking into staterooms on the steamer Kennebec at Lincoln wharf during July and August. He allegedly took $176 worth of men’s wearing apparel.
A Copp's Hill incident drew police to a North End cemetery after a man reported seeing a herdic and three men with spade and pick entering the grounds. Officers found two men in custody and a blindfolded youth hidden behind a tree. The trio were MIT students Reid, Colten, and Anderson, members of the Theta Society at Massachusetts State. the initiation reportedly involved simulating burial. The men were allowed to depart with a warning to avoid Copp's Hill for hazing again.
