Disappointing stock market closes with mixed signals
Friday’s trading showed a weak opening with broad selling and lower prices, while London activity in St Paul provided a notable feature. A late rally lifted industrials but the market remained dull with Sugar showing strength. Anticipation of Congress and the President’s message weighed on sentiment as a $1,750,000 gold engagement for tomorrow’s shipment emerged.

Freighter Sylvania to Mail Europe for Cunard Line
The Sylvania, a fast Cunard freight steamer under Captain Pritchard, will depart East Boston Sunday with specially addressed mail for Great Britain and Europe. Due to reduced winter passenger service, only two passenger sailings occur monthly, while Sylvania and Carinthia will handle mail then return to freight service to Liverpool in about nine days. The Umbria’s European mail closed yesterday, and Sylvania will carry the remaining letters across, preserving Cunard’s mail routes from this port for the season.

Sunk schooner Lillie settled for vessel and cargo
Five weeks after the collision at Board Sound between the two masted schooner Lillie from Portsmouth and Gloucester fishing schooner William H. Cross, a settlement was reached with the Cross owners paying for the sunken vessel and her cargo. Captain Coleman’s crew aboard the Charles A. Briggs report the mate Henry Duprez died onboard, aged about 40, from Cape Cod. The Cunard liner Lucania, fresh from Liverpool, was two hours behind its record time to New York. Docking efforts for the Galicia remain unsettled due to crowded docks at Mystic and New York & New England docks, with 3000 bales of cotton and large grain cargo aboard and concerns of remaining fire in cotton in No 4 hatch.
