Somerville A P A Battle Shapes Local Politics
Somerville faces a bitter campaign as the A P A led by Levi F. S. Davis challenges the Republicans and Democrats led by Albion A. Perry. The race centers on city control, education, immigration policy, and governance, with Davis denying formal A P A membership while seeking broad public support. Davis and Perry rally locals, and the ballot list shows Davis as mayoral candidate under A P A influence, Perry as Republican contender referenced as citizen candidate.

Wheeler Replies To Burke On East Boston Ferry Costs
In a letter to the editor, Wheeler denies Burke’s charges about ferry service costs and departmental savings. He attributes improved service and 12 hour daily third boat to prior administrations, disputes wage cuts, and defends contractor pricing and vessel maintenance while alleging Burke mismanages and withholds facts. Wheeler cites Kellough oversight and claims safer, cleaner operations under his watch.

Washington reports the British government will ban importation of American and Canadian sheep unless slaughtered at the port of landing starting January first. Dr. Salmon notes scab concerns but says the move stems mainly from superior British-mutton imports and rapid trade growth, with potential limits of 50 000 head discussed.

World’s Fair Hotels Described as Too Good for Kindling Wood
A Chicago Tribune account recalls the fate of World’s Fair hotels on the South Side. Some are repurposed as flats or still in use, while cheaper structures vanished. One building bears a bold for sale sign offering doors windows sashes and more, with a barkeeper-like salesman quoting “sale” in every form. A rubicund man asks for a door knob and is rebuffed, illustrating the retail futility of salvaging a once grand hotel.

Eaton's Death and Somerville City Engineer Probe
The Somerville Waterbury era unfolds as Horace L. Eaton, the city engineer who died by his own hand, is vindicated in public opinion. A council committee led by Alderman Rich extends the investigation into the sewer department amid strong local support and editorial critique. The editorial rebukes the original motive as personal and political, noting a small group weaponized a grudge with reports against Eaton. The piece traces testimony from witnesses and the junior Alderman from Ward 4, framing the inquiry as a broader clash over reform and accountability in city government.
