Promotion of Colonel Rige el Washington

A Manila cable reports General Hughes in Iloilo recommending promotion for Colonel Edmund Rice of the Twenty-sixth United States Volunteers and Colonel Carpenter of the Eighteenth Regular Infantry. If Rice is promoted, Lieutenant Colonel Joseph T. Dickman would become colonel, with Rice likely to command a Luzon brigade and Dickman remaining in Panay. Edward D. Anderson would vacate the senior major post.

Wild Woman in Woods Reported Near Forest Lake

Charles Tupper of Thorndike encountered a tall bare headed woman in a light dress in the Forest Lake woods. He says she appeared suddenly twice and ran away screaming, with hair loose and no wraps, prompting fear as darkness fell.

James B Slade Riverhead editor and inventor dies

James B Slade 81 died after a lingering illness in Riverhead. Born in Bath England he came to the United States at age four and grew up in Boston. He founded the Riverhead News and ran it as editor and proprietor until 1875. He held numerous patents including a ventilating stake hole device. His sister Mrs. Emily Hall lives in Waverly Massachusetts.

Remarkable Tests of Johnson Telegraphy in Chicago

In Chicago on November 27 Professor W Johnson and C L Fortier of Milwaukee demonstrated wireless telegraphy through seven rooms and walls with doors closed. They also sent signals through three fireproof vaults and a live switch board with many wires connected. A third test sent signals from inside a steel vault to an adjacent vault. The inventor claims a durable improvement over Marconi and portable operation.
