A blaze at a four story brick building at 140 Houston Street in New York left two dead William Helmboldt and his wife Matilda in a basement lamp accident. Victims and others suffered injuries as residents escaped, with extensive damage estimated at $6000.

The vessel was unseaworthy and undermanned with machinery failing. crew deserted, water and provisions ran low, and the crew fought darkness and breakdowns to reach Manila after 33 days at sea. The regiment will proceed to Zamboanga on the Pekin to garrison Mindanao ports.
