Impressions of the Sulu Harem by Mamie Hartley
Miss Mamie Hartley recalls her Philippines trip with Mrs. Angie Newman describing the Sulu Sultan’s harem as a “vision of wellness.” She notes villagers’ astonishment at light hair and clothing, visits the Sultana and Sultan, and portrays the harem as a single dark, dirty room with about forty women living on the floor.
