New Trial Granted in Laura Biggar Alienation Case

The New York Court of Appeals granted a new trial in the Laura Biggar case against Mrs. Agnes Hendrick of Bayonne who had won $50,589 later reduced to $30,187 for alleged alienation of her husband’s affections. The opinion by Judge Hiscock was joined by the full court. Dr. Hendrick ran a Layonne sanitarium and claimed $15,000 annual income, with only two contributions to his wife after meeting Miss Biggar totaling $125.

West End stock issue approved for 7000 shares

At a public meeting the West End Street Railway directors unan imously authorized issuing 7000 new shares to repay the Boston Elevated Railway for improvements. Sanction by the Public Service Commission remains a condition. The firm reported a $77 700 profit for the year, with dividends and taxes covered by the Boston Elevated Company. Directors elected included Edwin F. Atkins Parkman Dexter and others. A parallel city action granted $200 000 for four new portable fireproof school buildings to accommodate a rising pupil population in Mt Washington Winslow and Central districts.

Study of Heredity Emphasized by Dr Fernald

Dr W E Fernald, superintendent of the School for Feeble Minded at Waverley, urged Jamaica Plain club members to teach heredity laws to youth. He linked feeble mindedness to heredity, warned against marriages of such individuals, and called for more state institutions to handle the long waiting list. He argued that segregating feeble minded people and expanding care would cost less than addressing outcomes of inaction.

Mean Man Halts Boston Car Lines at Harvard Square

A man on Hurry Avenue set the rear brakes of a Huron Avenue streetcar near Harvard Square causing a 15 minute delay during rush hour. The car, loaded and barely moving, stopped midway up the incline until workers discovered brakes were applied from the rear platform. The incident blocked traffic and confused riders until the brake was released and the car resumed normal operation.

Burr Harris, a young Black man, was sentenced to be hanged for the murder of Mrs Rebecca Pp Gay, a Christian Science practitioner beaten to death on September 26. His attorney filed a notice of appeal and Harris admitted the crime, pleading temporary insanity.

Malden Fire Misled by Faulty Alarm Box

Malden's fire department rushed to Maplewood after a bogus alarm when a box tapped 77 then dispensed $9, none of which matched the department list. Chief Butler and crew scanned the horizon from the engine house cupola before learning the warning referred to L. L. Donnell at 70 Bowman Street.

Festmaster Edward C Mansfield announced that Christmas packages should be mailed one to two days earlier this year due to parcel post regulations allowing more items. Most packages except books will use parcel post.
