Burpee Dead After Assault Behind Stable

Albert S. Burpee a prominent Leominster provision dealer died after being assaulted Nov 20 by ex clerk Charles B Smith who was held on the grand jury charge of assault with a dangerous weapon. Burpee 56 died following cerebral hemorrhage an autopsy pending. Smith released on bail. Burpee survived by widow a son and two daughters.

Freight wreck near Salem slows Boston bound train

Slippery rails endangered the Boston bound Portland express near Salem as a freight switch error and an open switch caused a collision. Two men were injured, including Salem messenger Thomas Maling. Engineer Frank Kennard escaped unharmed. fireman Bert Woods injured. Wreckage blocked the line about three hours while officials planned an investigation and faulted the missing switch light.

Accidents injure three in South Boston area

In South Boston on Saturday afternoon three people were injured. James Mace was pinned by a tipping tip cart at 114 L Street and suffered a compound fracture of the left leg. William Vaughn, 25, of 9 West Broadway, fell from a car roof at West 1st Street Yard and sustained a compound fracture of the right leg. Joan G. Jones, 35, of 62 Liverpool Street East Boston, had fingers crushed when a guy rope broke.
