Army of Grand Duke Nicholas drives through Russian Poland and defeats German forces after four days of fighting. Tremendous losses and thousands captured reported as Berlin concedes repulse.
A midnight blaze trapped occupants of 109 111 Ruggles Street Roxbury forcing four to jump from second and third floor windows. Smoke and flames blocked the main stair, several residents were rescued, and a baby died from suffocation amid efforts to save others. Fire officials suspect possible arson as the sole stairway exit was engulfed.
Henry Siegel, former New York merchant banker, was found guilty of a misdemeanor linked to the collapse of his department stores and private banks in Geneseo New York. A $1000 fine and 10 months imprisonment were imposed with a June stay of execution if losses to bank depositors are remedied.
William Rockefeller and 20 former New Haven directors moved in federal court to dismiss criminal charges under the Sherman Act. They argue that the clerk who drew the grand jury panel is a New Jersey resident, claiming the panel source is outside the district.
