Secretary Daniels cabled Captain Decker of the Tennessee and Captain Omar of the North Carolina to act as needed to protect Americans in Turkey. He rescinded a prior order to remain passive pending inquiry into the Smyrna launch firing, relying on informal Ottoman assurances that the shots were friendly.
Arthur Diosy founder of the Japan Society says Japan is ready to supply a large army if needed to bolster allied forces in Europe. He is an authority on Anglo-Japanese affairs and spoke from London on November 22.
Mr. Diosy states the Japanese army is in full readiness and prepared to supply a large, well equipped, highly trained force for Europe if allied forces need augmentation. He cites the Trans-Siberian railway and abundant Japanese steamships as enabling transport of half a million men within two months.
Miss Constance Pettis of Boston was killed while waiting to board a car in Cambridge. Several others were injured as autos and motorcycles collided across Greater Boston, including Watertown’s John Eckert, Revere’s Arthur Widlund, and Chelsea’s Jacob Berger. A Downey Boston dealer vehicle was found smashed near Medford Border Road Fellsway West with blood and a broken windshield.
U S Army forces will withdraw from Vera Cruz as ordered by President Wilson, with about 6000 troops leaving tomorrow. Five battleships remain off Vera Cruz and Tampico to provide protection. The move aims to reduce potential friction and resettle Mexicans and captured records.
