All local strikes on government work were declared off except one at the Squantum plant. Strikes in Charlestown Chelsea Watertown and Hingham have been officially ended by labor leaders here.
Italian forces under General Diaz repelled Austro-German assaults along the Piave and Asiago fronts. In the north the town of Cismen and hill positions were captured by the enemy, while Italian aircraft bombed lines and engineers flooded areas near Grisolera to hinder shelling Venice. The war office reported continued fierce fighting, bold counterattacks, and prisoner taking.

Mrs. James M. Curley, wife of the mayor, says a group of school children surrounded her as she tried to exit her car near her home. The youngsters demanded the mayor and pressed her for his location, to which she initially remained courteous but faced continued heckling.
Washington November 16 Secretary Baker said the War Department sees no need to change the draft age this winter and will not seek a new law. The department believes sufficient manpower can be raised under existing legislation and propaganda cannot alter that stance.

The governor divides the state into 56 medical divisions with new five member advisory boards. Each board includes a general practitioner a surgeon an ENT specialist an ophthalmologist and a neurologist. Local boards continue to examine registrants and certify fit or unfit while doubtful cases go to the advisory boards for exhaustive review.
During the Dinorah performance in Chicago officials thwarted a bomb attempt when a gas pipe filled with powder was found on the main floor. Director Campanini ordered the orchestra to play The Star Spangled Banner, averting panic as the crowd remained seated.
With the house darkened the performance proceeded until a sheet of flame erupted from an aisle. Panic spread as people rushed to exits but order soon returned. Firemen later found a gas pipe bomb a foot long with powder and fuse. no suspects or culprit identified.

Friends of Rose J. Hall, a Lynn domestic, reported to the Lynn court yesterday after she pleaded not guilty to attempting to murder Mrs. Godfrey A. Johnson by sending a marsh mallows box with broken glass. Bail set at $10,000 for a further hearing on Nov. 21. she was remanded to Salem jail due to lack of bond.
Police say letters written by Miss Hall threatening Mrs Johnson match handwriting on a marshmallow box mailed last Monday. Godfrey A Johnson husband of the threatened woman is held as a material witness on $300 bail.

A party of Americans including El Paso firemen was shot at by armed Mexicans on an island in the Rio Grande near Fabens Texas. Jeff Graves of El Paso was wounded with both legs shot through.
