Cane Rush Tragedy Ends in Death at Institute
Hugh Moore, chairman pro tem of the freshman class at the Boston Institute of Technology, died after a cane rush where sophomores and freshmen struggled for possession of a single cane. The scene: a five foot cane pressed across his chest, hundreds crushed around him as they fought on. Moore, from Rochester, entered the Institute in September and had cautioned acquaintances that he might not participate. Officials report 28 students were involved and several minutes passed before rescue attempts revealed he was dead.
