A vast throng fills the tabernacle as Billy Sunday launches his campaign with bold defiance to the devil. Reported crowds exceed 99,000 across three sessions, with more than 10,000 turned away.
President Wilson arrived in capital after two months away to begin work on domestic issues and foreign policy. A cheering crowd at the railroad station greeted him with Mrs. Wilson and several officials present. Submarine warfare and State Department summaries loom as his administration moves forward with a broad, approved course.

In Marblehead this afternoon William G. Aery a contractor was killed and Patrolman Reuben C Paine seriously wounded after a confrontation when police attempted to arrest Aery for abusing his mother Both men exchanged gunfire at the gate Aery took a pistol from his pocket and shot Paine The officer returned fire striking Aery first in the mouth and then in the breast as both collapsed Paine called for help and fainted in the gutter
Chief Goodwin and another patrolman arrived to find both the prisoner and a patrolman unconscious in the street. They were taken by ambulance to Salem Hospital where Chief Goodwin guarded the bedside until his death at 8 10 tonight. Paine listed on dangerous list at midnight.
Charles E Hughes and William R Willcox plan to stay in New York for a week or more awaiting the official California vote count. They will vacation after the count and continue to insist on an official tally to ensure Wilson’s re election. Messages from across the country pour into Republican headquarters with many complaints received.
A Madrid wireless dispatch reports the American steamship Columbian was sunk by a German submarine after being forced to lie to during a gale on November 6. Sailors were ordered to abandon ship before it went down.

Ralph Tropp of the Eighth Regiment Ambulance Corps in D Company, recently returned from the border, was found dead in bed last night by his landlady Mrs. Annie Gough at 49 Walnut Street Neponset. Death was due to natural causes.
