The speech by Speaker Walker to seek the governorship next year triggers a bid to replace him this year. Talks last night with Senator Lodge at the Touraine point to Representative James F. Cavanagh of Everett as the preferred successor to Walker.
Senator Lodge strengthens bid for re election as Ames withdraws allies and Republicans collapse into support. Rival factions jockey for position with House leaders and ex governors retreating from Governor Draper and Speaker Walker. Conference continues into night as caucus strategy forms.

Rep Grafton Cushing of the Republican Legislature notes Lodge supporters tallying 153 to 1 against Lodge and a 27 vote Lodge majority, urging Republicans to stand by party caucus choice.

Newton, Nov 11 Henry Batey of 33 Thurston road Newton High lands was killed and his wife died a few hours later after a collision of a Boston and Worcester trolley car with their carriage at Boylston and Hartford streets. Batey, a machinist, crossed Boylston street as the Boston bound car, moving rapidly, was unseen by the motorman before the carriage appeared on the track.
A Newton car collision fatally injures Paul Batey, 44, born in England, who died two hours after the crash. His wife was injured but survived. The carriage and horse were crushed under the car while the vehicle continued toward Boston. Police pursued the motorman and conductor after the incident. Batey left seven children and worked at Pettee machine shops, Newton Upper Falls.
After five hours of executive session the striking drivers and helpers of five trans continental express companies tentatively agreed to return to work Monday under terms signed yesterday afternoon.
Miss Sadie Waters secures a $20,000 breach of promise verdict against Boston lawyer Frank A. Appleton. The Middlesex county jury awarded the full amount, among the largest ever for a woman in such a case, after an emotional argument by attorney Thomas J. Boynton.
In open court Judge Bond denied a motion to remove the Appleton case from the jury after lawyer Richardson argued a Boston newspaper article influenced the panel. Richardson stressed scant evidence from Miss Waters and questioned witnesses to the alleged engagement and marriage proposal. Miss Waters' relatives wept as ex Mayor Boynton urged justice for his client.
Forecast for New England calls for clearing and colder conditions Friday and Saturday with fair skies, moderate to brisk northwest winds, and diminishing winds Friday night. Local temperatures show yesterday's average around 46 and this time last year 42.

Walter G. Fall a 26 year old clerk at the State House confessed to arranging his own funeral and shooting two men, including the girl Esther Fogg's stepfather, after a thwarted elopement. He claimed vengeance on her family for blocking marriage. Authorities say Fall was influenced by guardian Rufus Tobey and had offered money to the guardian.
