Car Kills Couple in Carriage in Newton

Newton, Nov 11 Henry Batey of 33 Thurston road Newton High lands was killed and his wife died a few hours later after a collision of a Boston and Worcester trolley car with their carriage at Boylston and Hartford streets. Batey, a machinist, crossed Boylston street as the Boston bound car, moving rapidly, was unseen by the motorman before the carriage appeared on the track.

Newton Car Crash Kills English-born Man

A Newton car collision fatally injures Paul Batey, 44, born in England, who died two hours after the crash. His wife was injured but survived. The carriage and horse were crushed under the car while the vehicle continued toward Boston. Police pursued the motorman and conductor after the incident. Batey left seven children and worked at Pettee machine shops, Newton Upper Falls.
