Demonstration against Americans in Mexico City escalates from attacks on the American flag to street assaults on U S citizens. The incident provoked a strong protest from the American ambassador to the Mexican Foreign Relations Department and was telegraphed to Washington.
A mob of medical students and others attacked Americans in Juarez, tearing down an American flag at a candy store and injuring a child. The riot followed last night's executions and widespread anti American press attacks. Police and fire crews intervened as rioters clashed with authorities and at least one rioter was killed. Governor Landa Escandon and other officials pursued the demonstrators.
Early returns show Indiana’s next General Assembly will be Democratic on joint ballot by a solid majority likely 12 to 16 votes. This ensures a Democrat will succeed Senator Beveridge.
Miss Sadie Waters testifies in a $20,000 breach of promise suit against lawyer Frank A. Appleton denying whiskey drinking with him or others, any restaurant visits, mashes, or rides in automobiles. Both sides rested. arguments set for 9:30 a.m. and to run through the morning session.
Mr. Appleton testified during yesterday's morning session under cross examination by Lawyer Weeks for Miss Waters. He reported a yearly income around 3000 dollars, cash in bank under 200, ownership of three small rental properties in Revere and Malden, with Revere equity about 500 dollars and offering 1000 dollars for sale. He noted a 1000 dollar endowment policy due in 1920, a 200 dollar second mortgage overdue three years, stocks and bonds valued under 3000 dollars, and 5 dollars in Gloucester Savings Bank.
Joseph A. Walker, speaker of the Massachusetts House, announces his candidacy for governor next fall, signaling a break with party tradition by skipping the lieutenant governorship and appealing directly to Republican rank and file. He pledges to avoid money in the nomination and says his speaker duties will remain unaffected.
Two prosperous palmists were arrested in New York on charges of defrauding women of thousands of dollars. William H. Kohler, residing at 241 West Forty-fourth Street, is accused as a fugitive from justice under an indictment in Boston for swindling Mrs. Dora L. Coffin of 32 West Sixty first Street out of $24 000.
Royston Verrell of 220 West Forty sixth street, friend of Kohler, was arrested before the Hotel Astor on a warrant sworn by Mrs. William Palmer of East Fifty fourth accusing Verrell of swindling her of jewels and stock payments totaling 1 030. Palmer alleges Kohler used palm reading to ensnare her and preside over mining investments. Police later captured Kohler at Wigth Avenue and Forty fourth Street after a chase ending at detective headquarter. Both suspects deny wrongdoing and declined to discuss the charges.
Forecast notes unsettled conditions across Boston and nearby areas with rain likely today and colder temperatures tomorrow. New England expected to see rain in the south and rain or snow in the north with moderate southwest winds along the coast and for ships bound for Europe and the Grand Banks.
