Republicans push to edge near defeats as Fitzgerald and Gaston sweep Boston by large margins. Cox and Lodge led late, then were overtaken by late returns. Democratic vote surprises in a tightly fought state race.
The New York State Republicans suffered a landslide defeat as Al Smith won the governorship and swept the ticket. Senator Calder was defeated by a large margin, with Smith carrying the city by over 400 000 votes.
Thomas C. O'Brien captured the Suffolk County district attorney post with a wide victory over Joseph C. Pelletier in Boston and margins in Chelsea Winthrop and Revere. The result, achieved in the campaign's final days, shifts public opinion after forecasts favored Pelletier.
Returns from 711 of 1133 election precincts across 315 towns report numbers for U S Senator and other offices. The data list results including votes for Voluntary Association and Moving Picture Censorship and show counts for District Attorney Qualification.
Massachusetts voters returned Governor Channing H. Cox to a second term over John F. Fitzgerald by about 40 000 votes while Senator Henry Cabot Lodge barely led Colonel William A. Gaston by roughly 20 000 votes. Returns from Greater Boston districts shaped the Senate contest.
Nationwide returns show Democrats winning several key races. Brown secures New Hampshire governor, while Senate contests tilt in favor of Democrats in Rhode Island and Missouri.

Joseph C. Pelletier declined to discuss the defeat in the Suffolk county district attorney race. He said he must analyze the vote and would issue a carefully prepared statement tomorrow, adding there is nothing he wishes to say to the Boston Post at this time.
