Harvard varsity handicap track meet on Soldier Field featured wind challenges. H F Cochems set a Harvard shot put record with 42 feet 6 inches, while other events showed mixed results as football season draw near.

Rise of Boston billiards prodigy enters New York tourney

Charles J. Cutler, a rising Boston amateur billiard player, becomes the first New England amateur to surpass the 100 mark at the 11 inch game and enters Class B of the championship in New York. He left for the city last evening with Fred Eames. Cutler, born twenty two years ago in Boston, began playing billiards six years ago but dropped the game.

A.M. Cutler Rising in Suburban Billiards Tourney

The long time Mercantile Library Association player entered the Suburban Interclub tourney after three years away from top events. In 1897 he placed sixth to winner Mr Frizzel, then won first in 1898 ahead of Eaton Jewett Threshie Hooper and Parker L Eaton. On a 41 2 by 9 table with 10 inch balk lines he made a 62 run. This spring he began serious billiard study under Messrs Eames and Yatter and shows promise in match play.

Interscholastic League action at Charles River Park Brookline High and Cambridge Manual Training School played to a 0–0 tie. Brookline moved to Cambridge’s 5 yard line twice but fumbles and penalties halted drives while Cambridge repeatedly lost the ball on fumbles and downs. Matt, Parker, Wat kin, Farley and Quigley starred for Brookline with strong line play from Dexter and Watkins for Cambridge. Time ended with Brookline on the Cambridge 30 yard line.
