Dredger No 4 Sinks Off Slate Ledge Near Castle Island

Seven Italian sailors aboard the steam dredger No. 4 sank after being towed up the harbor. Five crew were rescued by tug Dolphin. two remained missing, last seen in the living room as the vessel sank. Dolphin assisted all survivors and a danger buoying is planned near the wreck.

Vermont Hearing on Mrs Rogers Death Sentence Likely to Stand

In Montpelier on November 1 the judiciary committee held a hearing on commuting the death sentence of Mrs Mary M Rogers who killed her husband in Bennington on August 14 1902 and on abolishing capital punishment. The committee ended with near unanimous opposition to commuting the sentence and to abolishing capital punishment.

Vesuvius Cone Collapses in Naples Crater Roars

The cone on the crater of Mount Vesuvius fell into the crater today causing a tremendous roar and a series of explosions. A vast black ash column spread over the surrounding country within about 25 miles, with the disturbance lasting only a short time.
