Exhibition of Student Work at School of Fine Arts and Crafts
The annual student exhibition at 349 Newbury Street opened yesterday and runs through June 2. Pupil work spans paintings water colors drawings sculpture design leather glass jewelry and batik with prizes awarded by Boston artists Charles Hopkinson Elizabeth Wentworth Roberts and Gertrude Fiske. Ralph Smith and Grace Barron among top winners.

Fire at Acme Works in East Boston Damages $12000
A blaze at Acme White Lead and Color Works on 27k Border Street East Boston caused about 12000 in damage. Firemen including Engine 9 personnel were briefly overcome but revived. Watchman George Quint spotted the fire at 145 PM. fumes from linseed oil and varnish hampered efforts. A sunken vessel and ferry delays limited water access and two fire boats could only use land lines. Superintendent Edward Glucker gave a statement of loss.

Drum Major’s Uniform Lost on Way to Memorial Day
A suitcase containing the drum major’s white and gold uniform, a nickel plated baton, and other trappings disappeared while the Trout band traveled from Everett to Lowell for Memorial Day services. The loss is valued at about $100.

Volcanic Outbreak Near Kalapana Advancing Lava
A volcanic outbreak occurred yesterday at a new point in an old crater midway between Kilauea and Kalapana. Lava is overflowing toward the seaside village, threatening Kalapana as the eruption progresses along the crater.
