In Kansas City on May 30 a man threw a large jackknife at Colonel Roosevelt's carriage. The blade struck John McGrath on the arm, the knife fell to the running board, and the assailant fled. McGrath described Roosevelt as treating the incident as trivial. Ernest Shell of the American Legion recovered the knife and handed it to police.
