Mary Conte, six and a half, was reported dead between 6 and 7 PM causing frantic grief for her mother. Medical staff at City Hospital treated her for a fractured skull and other injuries while police and officials investigated how the erroneous death notice reached authorities. The driver faced potential charges, later reduced to assault and battery, as the accident occurred at Broadway extension near Albany Street at 4 45 PM with 6 year old Anna Kelley present.
Conference of the home economics committee of the General Federation of Women's Clubs in New York heard speakers say women can dress with distinction for three to ten dollars per gown and manufacturers noted dress bills could be halved if women commanded it. In New York May 31 supporters of Mrs. Josiah Evans Cowles claimed an early lead over Mrs. Samuel B. Sneath in the federation presidency as results from six states showed Cowles ahead with 460 votes to 168. The election capped the federation's 13th biennial convention, with 2446 delegates and about 1800 voting as many West and Central delegates left for home or did not vote due to friendships for the candidates.

Two young girls Mary Modes Gillanti 17 and Henrietta Fully 16 were killed when an auto plunged 12 feet from a small bridge over the Nonesuch River on the state highway to Saco. One man was dying and three others were badly shaken. The crash occurred late today in Portland, Maine.

Harry Schrensky and John Gardner of Portland hospitalized with shock and bruises after a car leapt a closed bridge and fell to the concrete below. Dr. Arthur Warren Waite faces the electric chair tomorrow in the criminal branch of the Supreme Court after his conviction for the murder of John E. Peck. A death sentence is expected with immediate transfer to Sing Sing prison afterward.
Mazda lamps will be furnished to lighting customers with sizes 15 25 40 50 60 100 150 250 400 500 and 750 watts. New pricing lists show per lamp charges and some sizes marked free as part of the new plan.
A new 50-watt Mazda lamp, delivering about 50 candle power, will replace the 50-watt GEM lamp now common, which yields 20 candle power. The GEM lamp will be withdrawn soon, with 40-watt and 60-watt lamps also slated for withdrawal within a year. Prices for 15, 25 and 40-watt lamps have been reduced.

Mexico City May 31. The Mexican government demands immediate withdrawal of U S troops from Mexico arguing U S protests clash with actions and sovereignty. A 12,000 word note issued by the foreign office cites U S incursion and warns of armed force if withdrawal is not completed.
The note states American troops crossed the border after the Columbus incident without Mexican permission, calling the first act not an invasion due to misread attitude. It asserts the second crossing, after the Glenn Springs incident, was invasion despite claims of consent from the Mexican consul at Del Rio.
LOURENCO MARQUES May 31 The steamer City of Savannah from Calcutta May 11 to Boston and New York has reached port with the forehold on fire. The vessel’s position is described as serious.
London May 31 Sir Ernest Shackleton and five companions set out in a 22-foot boat from Elephant Island to reach South Georgia after Endurance was crushed. Twenty two crewmen remained behind in the ice cliffs awaiting rescue while Shackleton and the five men navigated over 500 miles to Port Stanley for help.
Since October 1914 Sir Ernest Shackleton has not spoken, with only a final message from South Georgia. The Endurance aimed for the Weddell Sea then south toward the pole and Ross Sea, seeking a relief party. The Aurora's ice disaster in Ross Sea ends contact, leaving Shackleton and followers presumed dead.
In New York on May 31 Roosevelt’s odds on the Republican nomination shortened to 6 to 5 as Hughes leads the field. Chicago reports the favorite sons and Roosevelt group uniting to force Hughes to clarify his views or repudiation of efforts to gain delegates.
The piece notes Hughes refuses to state his views as Roosevelt supporters and other candidates push to force a public statement. The Post reporter predicts the strategy to "smoke out" Hughes will fail since he will not issue any remarks.
