St Paul May 29 James J Hill railroad builder and financier dies at his home. His estate is estimated between 100000000 and 300000000 dollars, likely nearer the lower figure. The Northwest’s most noted figure is mourned by the region.
The best estimate of Mr Hill’s wealth came as Europe lurched into war in July 1914. He gathered bankers from First National Bank and Northwestern Trust Company, showing 310 million in securities. Bank loans and emergency currency were arranged, with Hill retaining ultimate control of key banks and rail interests, passing to Louis W Hill upon his death.
London dispatches say lack of Balkan news fuels general comment and suspicion that Greece faces a near certain revolution. Reported plans suggest the Greek army may join Allied forces and advance into Bulgaria, with censors delaying dispatches in London and Paris.
Berlin reports that central municipal kitchens will be funded to feed city populations during the war. Lawrence police hunt a man and woman after Mrs Fannie Harmon known as Mme Harmon a lodging house keeper and clairvoyant was found murdered Sunday morning. A dragnet across New England searches for the couple who booked a room Saturday night and vanished shortly after.
Lieutenant Vose and inspectors released six men after examining victims and Harmon's lodgers at 165 Essex Street. Police suspect a drunken row tied to the killing. robbery is considered but unproven. Mrs Harmon owned the lodging house six months, funded by inheritance from Augusta, Maine. The unclaimed body lies at Colby's morgue with Western relatives notified.
Grand Rapids May 29 It is reported Arthur Warren Waite will not be executed until his wife Clara Louise Peck Waite receives a divorce The divorce case began in April and will be tried in July or August New York authorities are said to have assured sparing the wife the stigma of being wed to a man to die for killing her parents
New York May 29 President Haughton of the Braves travels to New York to protest National League umpires he alleges bias against Boston. He will meet President Tener at 9 o clock tomorrow morning.
Major-General Leonard Wood and Lieutenant-Commander Frank T. Evans led a Memorial Day eve rally at the Boston Opera House in support of the military and naval Plattsburgs. Over 2000 attendees, including veterans and fashionable society members, heard calls for readiness to defend American shores and institutions.
Back Bay society women in white nurse and khaki uniforms led ushers for the Special Aid Society Massachusetts Branch mass meeting. General Wood urged sending more men to Plattsburg camps and naval cruises as W. Cameron Forbes presided. Speakers included George Wharton Pepper and Lt Cmdr Evans with officers of the Society and several prominent attendees.
John T. Lindley of 285 Main St Everett fired on two burglars during an attempted robbery at his drug store about 1 45 am. One thief was wounded in the shoulder and both fled the scene pursued by police. Officers searched the district with help from nearby towns but found no trace of the robbers. The wounded suspect is described as about 20, five feet five, light suit and hat. The other man remains unidentified.
Chicago May 29. A statement issued after a two day meeting lists delegates from 25 states and Alaska, with authorized representatives from churches, social and business groups, and the German American Press. It urges neutrality, a foreign policy defending American lives and interests, condemns pro belligerent acts, warns against racial division, and favors party unity behind a compatible presidential candidate.
