More than 400 Progressives gather at Esther Hall Malden to hear Charles Sumner Bird advocate a living wage and fair play for workers. Attendees cheer with flags and umbrellas as Bird enters and addresses the crowd.

Republicans and Progressives clash in Malden and Boston rallies

Across the street from Progressive festivities a Republican smoker held in the Auditorium. Speakers included Charles Underhill and Herman Hormel. A Progressive rally followed with Alvan T. Fuller presiding and Matthew Hale Charles Sumner Bird and Charles A. Cox speaking against amalgamation with Republicans. Bird urged living wages and fair labor treatment while Hale predicted a doubled Progressive vote next election.

By a vote of 108 to 8 yesterday the House rejected the bill from the recess committee on municipal finance. The measure would have let mayors appoint assessors and selectmen in towns elect them, with the tax commissioner’s approval required.
