The President probes pension office graft and weighs General Andrew Davidson as Raum successor. New Yorker assessments praise Davidson, Raums's recent statements undercut his credibility, and a resignation may come soon amid ongoing inquiries and mounting pressure. Treasury to issue silver certificates under existing law
The Secretary of the Treasury will issue silver certificates from the silver profit fund now in Treasury cash following the silver act. The Attorney General says the 1878 coinage act set a standard for silver dollars and certificate issuance, unchanged by later laws. Seignorage from new coinage totals about 2.5 million dollars with over 1 million more awaiting transfer, while a plan to certify against fractional silver faces tighter legal hurdles and likely rejection.

Departments keep open as Judge Taft’s son attends funeral
War Department and Department of Justice will not close for the funeral of Judge Taft who led both departments under Grant. Secretary Proctor and Attorney General Miller declined to shut offices, noting the high cost and minimal public benefit. The decision follows Iowa Governor McCrary’s earlier case and reflects a shift away from holiday closings for a former head’s death.
