The Berkshire trolley bill, a major railroad measure, faced renewed Senate action after slipping to engrossment. Senator O Connor moved to reconsider and postpone, while Senator Lomasney alleged pressure to push the bill through and warned it was advancing quietly.
President Treadway leaves his seat to defend the bill as a hurried call is sent for Senator Turtle, committee on railroads chairman, who is celebrating his wedding anniversary. No sooner did Senator O'Connor move reconsideration than a demand followed.
George von L Meyer receives a cable from Captain Albert Mertz reporting that the west side of drydock Dewey sank Tuesday morning with the shore end nine feet above water and the other end one foot above. Officials expect to raise in three weeks and a court of investigation is ordered. The Bureau of Yards and Docks notes the machinery likely survives submersion.
In Bluefields Nicaragua on May 25 two American gunboats Paducah and Dubuque anchored near Venus a vessel that secretly left New Orleans and was converted into a cruiser for government forces against revolutionists. A first American death or injury will trigger U S. gunboats to follow Bob Evans and sink the Venus in the harbor.
Government troops mass at a high bluff to crush Estrada's revolutionary forces in Bluefields. Skirmishes rage with casualties as Marines guard the US custom house and American interests. The Venus sails back to join the fight, while American mercenaries aid Estrada's cause amid looming attacks on Americans.
Mayor Fitzgerald directed the Finance Commission to investigate charges by Frank Gallivan, a former Boston Board of Health chemist, accusing Dr. S H Durgin and Milk Inspector James O Jordan of collusion with big milk firms. A special Finance Commission meeting was called. Durgin declined to discuss the matter, saying Gallivan cannot prove anything. Jordan also refused to comment.
More than a million gallons were pumped through the South Boston sewer as crews search for John Gorham who fell into Kemp Street sewer Tuesday. Despite full operation of pumps and teams entering the manholes, no trace was found. Sewer gas hindered work until manholes were opened along the route toward the main line.
Oliver Spitz er, pardoned, explains he did not confess at trial because admitting it would have implicated a dead man Henry O Havemeyer, late head of the sugar trust. Spitz er was convicted and sentenced to two years at Atlanta for his role with the American Sugar Refining Company in Williamsburg Brooklyn.
Spitzer testified under cross examination in the Charles R. Heike case, secretary treasurer of the American Sugar Refining Co. Heike and five subordinates are charged with conspiring to defraud the government by underweighing sugar. Spitzer earlier testified for the prosecution and persisted in his account today.
Halley's comet may be observed in the southwestern sky for about four hours tonight weather permitting. The moon rises at 10 30 p m so the best viewing occurs between 8 and 10 30 p m when the sky is clear. Harvard Observatory figures show the comet 90 000 000 miles from the sun and 29 000 000 miles from Earth as it recedes.
In thick fog at Tillson's wharf the turbine Belfast failed to heed orders and struck the steamer James T. Morse. The Morse sank within ten minutes as Belfast pulled away, leaving about 50 people aboard the Morse with a narrow escape from disaster.
Firemen and deckhands fled berths as passengers escaped with valuables. The Belfast suffered no major damage and steamed toward Bangor. The Morse wreck caused about $10,000 in damage. freight losses may match that amount. The Belfast reached the inner harbor at 3 17 this morning and docked near Tillsons wharf after a wide swing.
