Pluviose Sinks After Collision With Pas de Calais Ferry

Paris report says the French submarine Pluviose sank in the English Channel after colliding with the Pas de Calais ferry near Calais. Twenty seven crewmen perished as divers searched the wreck in 160 feet of water while tugs and a wrecking vessel moved toward the site.

Harvard Observatory data show Halley’s Comet observable in the western sky tonight from sunset until it sets at 9 07 p m if skies are clear. It will set tomorrow at 11 10 p m standard time. The comet sits 92 million miles from the sun and 32 million miles from the earth.

Governor Signs Quiet Fourth of July Fireworks Bill

Governor Draper signed a law taking effect June 1 prohibiting sale or possession of blank cartridges and certain pistols or explosives. The act bans fireworks containing picric acid and restricts firecrackers to under two inches in length and under three quarters of an inch in diameter.

Three Hour View of Halley's Comet at Harvard Observatory

The Harvard College Observatory reported Halley's comet visible for over three hours last night. Observations by O C Wendell and E C Pickering noted magnitudes around 6.43, a sharp head, and a tail extending toward Jupiter. Nine photographs were taken and the sky remained dark for naked-eye viewing until dawn.
