A group of Portuguese workers hired as strike breakers in Fall River faced an angry mob during the freight handlers' dispute this afternoon. Police intervened to prevent violence as tensions mounted. further details follow on Page 5.
Clergymen urge Massachusetts lawmakers to amend Lord's Day laws to curb vaudeville shows and entertainments. Dr Kneeland argues Boston could become as open on Sundays as Paris if the law stays unchanged. Governor considers a message to the Legislature to close sacred concerts and sideshows before the session adjourns.
Four pardons were granted by the Governor's Council after a lengthy session. Cornelius Nagle, serving a life term for murder, Cornelius Usher who has served two years of a three year sentence for larceny, Francis R. Burton serving 18 months for obtaining money under false pretences, and Thomas McNulty, a 16 year old sent to the Concord Reformatory for nine months on a vagrancy charge.
Two boys, Herbert Burgess and Harry Stoddard, were aboard a sailboat near Robert's Point when a squall overturned their canoe. Neither could swim, and both bodies were recovered after witnesses heard their cries. Burgess, a Newtonville High School junior, and Stoddard, a Museum of Fine Arts Art School student, were from Newtonville. their families faced shock as investigators ruled the deaths accidental.
Dominick Ferino 34, of 30 Clark Street, was crushed to death aboard the gravel lighter No 1 near Commonwealth docks in South Boston yesterday afternoon. He attempted to escape by forcing his head into a grinding wheel and died instantly as the cogs crushed his skull. His arm and hand were trapped as he fought to free himself. later his wife and children were notified. He worked for P O Riordan and Co contractors.
The Standard cites a Russian correspondent asserting wholesale executions across cities after disturbances. It reports 600 hanged in Warsaw, with many more in Cronstadt and Moscow. Coffins were buried at Kronstadt as troops concealed the deaths in the woods at night.

Last week the council denied Nagle’s pardon by a four to four tie. Yesterday the Tull council, with Lowe present, approved six to three for a pardon with six supporters named. Nagle and Patrick Sullivan, who died in jail, were sentenced to life for the Darcy Foster murder in Billerica on September 11, 1894. Nagle to be released this morning. Unanimous pardon for Cornelius Usher. John Coughlin confessed and drawn an 18 month term. Francis R Burton, a Dumont promoter, served 18 months for false pretences against the New York Central. Thomas McNulty pardoned. son of Edward McNulty of Malden. with two others, jailed for vagrancy in Worcester last fall. the other two pardoned earlier.
E M Leonard of Winthrop reports two 16 year old boys Burt and Joseph Mattie missing after a rain squall swept their 28 foot Eva catboat off Long Island Head. Harbor watchers saw the gust strike the vessel and the boat lean hard to windward. Despite a private search by the boys' fathers and friends no trace was found by midnight.
Two Harvard students nearly drowned after their canoe capsized opposite the B A A boathouse near Riverside. Officer Chaisson of the Metropolitan Police arrived in time to pull them from the water as they sank for the third time and transported them to Boulevard Station where they recovered. they refused to give their names. This marked the 28th river accident since the canoeing season opened.
