LIAOYAND May 24 Several Japanese who landed from junks near Port Arthur and started toward the town with the intention of dynamiting the docks were captured and shot A typhoon is raging off the coast.
A general alarm was issued for two highwaymen who assaulted grocer John R. Lee near Washington and Newhall streets and wounded Officer John Lydon after Lee closed his shop. Lee carried $200 and a gas watch. one thief felled the officer with a stone, the other escaped into darkness as locals assisted. Lydon pursued the captive, then investigated a retreating figure in shrubbery before diners and neighbors, miscommunication let the second suspect slip away. He notified headquarters and nearby towns of the fugitives.
New York May 24. Lawrence J. Curran, president of the International Freight Handlers Union, telegraphs union reps along the New York New Haven Hartford line to order all freight handlers out tomorrow morning. A general tie-up of the road is planned with Boston freight houses to follow and brakemen on freight trains may be called out in a day or two.
The House refused to concur with the Senate to repeal the semicolon law allowing hotels in cities over 45 000 to stay open until midnight every day except Sunday under police and license restrictions. The vote blocks granting extra hours to select hotels like Parker's Young's and the Touraine, keeping the discrimination feared by the bill.
