Cadets Praised as Drill at Mechanics Hall Delights Crowd

The Boston School Cadets held a prize drill at Mechanics Hall with Sgt Pratt and W J O Leary winning gold medals. The second day featured regimental drills, pony and senior company competitions, and a dress parade judged by Lt Col J Ball and others. Medals and white blue flags were awarded to top teams and individuals.

Roach Game for a Bride Ends Behind Cell Door

The Roach criminal plot unraveled with John T Roach captured in Boston while a planned wedding never took place. Police tied the case to a Dominion Bank robbery at Napanee Ontario on August 28 1897 netting 32000 in cash and unsigned notes. Relatives and suspects pursued include Edward Holden Edward Pare and Bank Teller Ponton. Roach accused as planner denied identity pleading not guilty with bail set and extradition anticipated as two Montreal officers prepare to claim him.

Wollaston Man Kingsley ends life after platform crisis

Benjamin H. Kingsley 28, a demented Wollaston resident, leapt before an express train near Wollaston station after learning of his Taunton asylum commitment. Baggage master Warren Cameron sprang into action, tackling Kingsley and guiding the train past him. Kingsley died from injuries. earlier he had a similar desperate episode. Separately, John Nixon of Dorchester lost 75 dollars after a stranger solicited foreign money and staged a quick theft at the Shoe and Leather National Bank. The thief remains at large.

Ninth annual Choir Guild festival at Advent Church

Prices at the Church of the Advent Brimmer street last evening hosted the ninth annual festival of song by the first section of the Choir Guild. Advent and Messiah of Boston plus several parish choirs participated. Mr S B Whitney conducted and Mr Harry E Wry played the organ. The event featured an anthem Lead Kindly Light by Sullivan. The Guild now has about thirty choirs and around 100 choristers.
