Stock Market Ends Mixed After Afternoon Setback in New York

In New York on May 24 the stock market, after recent strength, eased in the afternoon with generally fractional declines from last evening. Volume was large, led by gains in St. Paul and Atchison, amid reports of April earnings increases and a $36 million gold export, but money rates threatened to rise and selling cooled demand. Weakness appeared in several lead issues, with Grangers and coalers slipping to day’s lows, while San Francisco, Denver, Texas and Fort Worth, and Kingston & Pembroke showed notable strength among low-priced shares.
