Ross, enraged after a neck blow, felled La Royer with a back attack, leaving the crowd divided by language. Hartrorp Connecticut May 24 Governor Bulk eley vetoed last week’s bill aimed at prohibiting oleomargarine manufacture and sale. The house narrowly sustained the veto with 79 yeas to 62 nays, as only a slim quorum remained.
New Haven May 24 The Merchants' National Bank faces heavy losses from undisclosed discounting of notes by Cashier John C Bradley and Assistant Teller Charles W Palmer. Investigations show notes were discounted without board approval for years. Loss estimated from 50000 to 100000 with potential higher figures. Palmer confessed. Bradley detained. Examiner Dooley in charge. Names of other merchants involved withheld.
The Reformed Episcopal Church convention reviewed foreign missions funding with $389045 raised in two years and planned to add B. K. Usher M D to the presbyterate as bishop. In Loxpox on May 24 Gladstone was struck by a turning cab at Piccadilly and Berkeley street. He rose, chased the vehicle, and the driver was seized by police. Gladstone attended the House of Commons that evening seemingly unhurt.
May 24 Dusur reports tenants resisting eviction on the Olphert estate. Bailiffs and police faced barricades and missiles as boiling water was thrown. Inspector Duff was badly wounded. Fourteen suspects were arrested as officers and bailiffs suffered scalding injuries.
