The steamship Polynesian sustained severe damage after colliding with the Cynthia. The bow from the upper deck to the keel is missing for about twenty feet, the fore compartment filled with water, and cargo in that area damaged or lost. Captains and pilots from both ships gave statements and will under go official inquiry.
In New York on May 23 Wilmerding Morris and Mitchell conducted the largest dry goods auction for Bliss Fabyan and Co. The sale realized about 1,500,000 dollars, far above expectations, offering tickings cheviots hickory and blue stripes tricots ducks awnings and furniture coverings. Nearly 1000 spectators attended the New England Intercollegiate Athletic Association annual meeting at Agricultural Park Worcester. Last evening a mysterious explosion struck the Centre Street residence of Mrs. E. M. Weld in Jamaica Plain. Miss Rosa Rogers narrowly escaped injury as a iron pipe missile exploded in the room, leaving a two foot hole in the floor. officer Hildreth found loaded shots and fragments scattered about. No motive or suspect has been identified and Mrs. Weld denies enemies.
The Fourth Artillery battery from Fort Preble Portland Me boarded the Savannah steamer Gate City to travel to Atlanta Ga to relieve the Second Artillery to be brought North. Batteries from Fort Warren and Fort Adams will follow with Major William Sinclair in command at Warren and Cap Scantling and Captain Taylor leading their units. Mitchells Battery G will garrison Fort Preble.
