Coal price rise unsettles Boston dealers
Boston coal dealers report stove coal rising to eight dollars a ton in April, up one dollar from April last year. They insist no price conspiracy exists and that increases result from individual pricing, with occasional social meetings at a banquet board.
Coal Dealers Cite Scarcity as Factor in Price Rise
J Frank Wellington of Wellington-Wild Coal says stove coal rose from $7 in April last year to $8 this April. He notes no formal price agreement among dealers, predicts a 45 to 50 cent rise over normal, and expects guidance after wholesale rates are set in New York by operators. F Fox of Marston Coal cites lockout and scarcity, anticipating further increases and possible price adjustments after NY notice. lL S Chase of Bay State Fuel denies formal coal dealer organization, says prices rise by coincidence and will be set after Operators speak. no coal since April, winter price $7.50, current $8, with expected drop after decision.
