Lena Cusumano, sentenced to die in the electric chair the week of June 2, seeks mercy through her lawyers who reveal a romance that estranged her from sister Endeligato, whose testimony aided the conviction. The submission to Governor Foss attributes the family rift to their Sicilian girlhood and ongoing enmity.
A sister reportedly left Italy with Mrs. Cusumano's lover and both moved to the United States where they wed. Lena later joined them, married Frank Cusumano, and is alleged to have murdered him.
Bourne May 24. The upcoming marriage of Mrs Louise Garland to Francis Cushing Green of New York will cost her the entire fortune left by her late husband James A Garland. A close associate says the sacrifice is to take place as she becomes Green’s bride, clarifying speculation about the Garland estate.
A statement notes that the beneficiary loses income from the estate though she will stay as trustee until her three sons reach specified ages or milestones outlined by Mr. Garland's will.
Results across the American and National Leagues include Boston beating Philadelphia 4 to 3, New York 11 over Washington 6, and Boston 8 Philadelphia 5 with New York 6 to Brooklyn 3. Pittsburg 7 Chicago 3, Cincinnati 10 St. Louis 6. Harvard scholastic meet and Harvard vs Princeton in New York noted.
A storm caused a crash in Saugus as a ferry boat named Brewster struck a trolley car on Charles Street. Several injuries were reported and nearby houses in the suburbs faced danger from the incident.
Boston endures a record hot May day before a spectacular storm. Lightning damaged telephone and electric services, two powder mills exploded in Acton, a trolley car was struck in Boston, and a North Station train shed was hit. In North Saugus a deadly crash occurred after rain slicked rails injuring 12, two seriously.
Ormsby McHarg of New York, a Roosevelt campaign manager, said in Chicago that Roosevelt forces will not accept Elihu Root as temporary convention chairman. He indicated Roosevelt supporters prefer a chairman aligned with Roosevelt policies and named Hadley, Johnson, or Clapp as acceptable alternatives.
Friends of Ambassador Curtis Guild expect him to run for the United States Senate to succeed Senator Crane. A confidant said Guild will announce before June 4 on his departure for Russia that he would consider a Republican party call to run if urged by Massachusetts Republicans.
A rear-end crash on Walnut Street North Saugus injures two seriously and ten minor as a special car struck a regular Lynn and Wakefield trolley car during a thunderstorm. The motorman could not stop in time on the slippery hill. Continued on Page 4-Third Column.
