Suffrage Bill Clears House in 304 to 1089 Vote

Supporters cheer as the suffrage bill passes the House by 304 to 1089 with 42 more than the two thirds required. The measure now heads to the Senate where a fierce contest is expected early next month. Two amendments were voted down as backers push toward final enactment.

Police Nab Fugitive After Apartment House Standoff

Traced by police to 1412 Commonwealth Avenue officers surround the house and nab Barney at the back door. He tears away, dashes through the home to the front, bolts outside, and is pursued by police revolvers. He is finally captured after a brief chase through the premises.

Bandit Recaptured After 31 Hours Flight From Jail

Herman L. Barney, alias gunman and alleged slayer Patrolman Charles Deininger, was recaptured after a 31 hour escape from Charles Street jail. He fled Tuesday with a woman companion who escaped. Barney surrendered after a quarter mile chase to officers firing a fusilade of bullets past his head, taken from an apartment at 1412 Commonwealth Avenue where he hid.

House backs Susan B. Anthony amendment for a second time

The House of Representatives approved the Susan B. Anthony amendment by 304 to 89, endorsing national suffrage for women for a second time. Supporters prepared to push the measure to the Senate where passage remained uncertain.

Lawrence Textile Strike Ends After 15 Weeks

A mass meeting at Lexington Hall voted unanimously that the Lawrence strike is over. The long walkout affected about 10,000 workers over 15 weeks. Amalgamated Textile Workers of America officers Rotzell and Long will stay to run union business and settle arrears as funds come in. Arrangements will be made to return strikers' children and no further aid will be distributed.

Balloon Tender Chicago Returns From New York and St Johns

The cruiser Chicago, tender to the planned trans Atlantic balloon expedition, which was abandoned after the C-5 blew out to sea, has returned to Chicago from St John s Newfoundland after a voyage from New York.

More Time Granted to Germany on Peace Terms

Paris reports the German peace delegation has been granted seven extra days to reply to the terms, extending the deadline to May 29. The extension covers disputed territorial questions among the points under consideration.

Governor Coolidge seeks longer eviction notice period

In a special message to the Legislature Governor Coolidge urges extending the time for surrender of rental property before eviction and lengthening the gap between tenancy at will termination and tenant vacating. He notes current law allows 48 hours notice to move and calls for new legislation to address the crisis.

NC-4 to resume Lisbon flight after engine fix

Ponta Delgada May 21 AP Lieutenant Commander A C Read said NC-4 will start at daybreak tomorrow if weather allows after engine trouble postponed the Lisbon flight. NC-3 wreck has been hauled to the beach for dismantling before shipment to the United States aboard the tender Melville. Commander Towers said 10 mechanics would need three months to repair the plane.

Plane forced down in South Portland during fog

A Curtiss advance training plane piloted by Major A H Gilkeson and Master Signal Electrician H M McGraw landed in a small field in South Portland after darkness hampered navigation on a Bangor bound flight from Mineola. The four hour ten minute trip from Mineola and the two minute Boston leg are noted with plans for a Portland to Bangor record attempt once fog and rain lift.

Yesterday’s National League games included Pittsburgh, Boston 2 with Cincinnati New York affected by rain. Chicago Brooklyn also rained out. American League scores show Detroit 6 and Boston Cleveland 7, Philadelphia 2, St. Louis 1 and Washington 0. New York Chicago games were rained out.
