NC-4 to Lisbon on dawn voyage from Ponta Delgada

Lieutenant-Commander Albert C. Read plans a six o'clock start for Lisbon to complete the cross Atlantic flight. The NC-4 was refueled after overhaul at Ponta Delgada. The NC-1, commanded by Lieutenant-Commander Bellinger, sank near Corvo as heavy seas prevented salvage by the Fairfax. hull damage and water fill caused the wings to break and the aircraft to settle deep.

May 20 report from Ponta Delgada says NC-1 sank at sea after fog during transatlantic flight. NC-3 badly damaged at moorings and being dismantled for shipment to New York.
