Deadly Break Fires In Lowell Mill
In Lowell on May 21 a ten inch iron steam pipe 170 feet long collapsed in the No 5 Appleton mill. Lena La Plante was killed instantly while Marie Damour and Effie McDonald were slightly injured. The pipe carried engine exhaust of about 2000 horsepower to the slasher room and had stood for 23 years. The fall occurred as the engines had run only three quarters of an hour. The blast sent clouds of steam as workers fled. La Plante’s skull was crushed and the cause remained unknown after expert inspection.
